Tata Power Signs ₹30,000 Crore MoU With Assam Govt To Develop 5000 MW Renewable & Clean Energy At Advantage Assam 2.0

Tata Power, one of India’s leading integrated power companies, has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Assam at Advantage Assam 2.0. This agreement reinforces Tata Power’s commitment to advancing renewable energy and sustainable development in the state. Under this MoU, Tata Power will develop up to 5000 MW of renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage solutions, with an estimated investment of ₹30,000 crores over the next five years.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Krishna Kumar Dwivedi, Principal Secretary of Power, Government of Assam, and Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, in the presence of Assam’s Chief Minister, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with other senior government officials. As part of this collaboration, the Assam Government will facilitate the identification and allocation of approximately 20,000 acres of encumbrance-free government land on a lease basis while also assisting in the acquisition of private land suitable for renewable energy projects. The government will further support infrastructure development to ensure smooth power transmission and promote the establishment of Renewable Energy Parks through state agencies.

This initiative also includes the identification of land for Group Captive sites, enabling industries and tea gardens to access clean energy under Assam’s land allotment and industrial policies. To accelerate project execution, the Assam Government has committed to providing single-window clearances for statutory approvals, financial incentives, and fostering collaborations with research institutions to drive innovation in the renewable energy sector. Additionally, skill development programs will be introduced to build a trained workforce for the implementation and operation of these projects.

Assam has been making significant strides in the renewable energy sector, leveraging its abundant natural resources to unlock a renewable energy potential of 14,487 MW, with solar power leading the way. The state has set ambitious targets, aiming to achieve 500 MW of solar capacity by 2027. This partnership aligns with Tata Power’s broader vision of supporting Assam’s clean energy transition and helping the state meet its renewable energy goals.

In addition to this agreement, Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has signed another MoU with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to enhance renewable energy adoption and improve energy efficiency across the state. This partnership will focus on scaling up rooftop solar installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY) while also generating 3,000 direct employment opportunities, thereby contributing to Assam’s clean energy transition and economic development.

Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, mentioned, “These MoUs marks significant steps towards developing renewable and clean energy capacity, leveraging Assam’s vast potential in solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage. With strong policy support, infrastructure development, and skill enhancement initiatives, this collaboration will not only strengthen the state’s energy security but also drive economic growth and job creation. Tata Power remains committed to delivering sustainable energy solutions that align with Assam Government’s vision for a greener future and India’s ambitious target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.”

Tata Power has already made notable progress in Assam’s renewable energy landscape. The company has successfully installed a robust 20 MW solar rooftop capacity, deployed over 300 EV home chargers, and established more than 20 public EV charging stations, reinforcing the state’s shift towards greener energy solutions and the adoption of electric mobility. Through these strategic collaborations, Tata Power continues to play a transformative role in India’s energy sector. The company’s ongoing efforts in states like Odisha and Assam reflect its strong commitment to renewable energy adoption and sustainable development, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable energy ecosystem in alignment with India’s net-zero ambitions.
