Thyssenkrupp Uhde (Uhde) has been awarded pre-front-end engineering design (FEED) contracts for two 400,000 tonne-per-year (tpa) green ammonia plants in Brazil, under development by Norway-based Fuella.
The two projects are located at the Port of Açu in Rio de Janeiro and at the Port of Pecém in Ceará, and are intended to support Brazil’s position as an exporter of green ammonia.
Uhde said its ammonia synthesis technology could be used at both sites, based on an adapted Haber-Bosch process that combines a medium-pressure synthesis stage with a conventional high-pressure loop.
The company will also oversee the integration of electrolysers, balance of plant equipment, and ammonia handling infrastructure across both sites.
Fuella signed the initial area reservation contracts for both projects in 2024, although no development timelines have been confirmed.
Uhde’s sister company, Thyssenkrupp Nucera, provides alkaline water electrolysis technology for hydrogen production, including at large-scale ammonia projects like Select Energy and Juno Joule’s in India.
Electrolyser suppliers for the Brazilian projects have not been confirmed, but H2 View has reached out to Uhde for additional information.
The developments add to a growing list of large-scale green hydrogen and derivative projects in Brazil looking to export to consumptive markets such as Europe.
Uhde also recently won a for expanding ammonia export infrastructure at an 800,000tpa ammonia facility it built in Brunei.
