UGI Energy Services, a subsidiary of UGI Corporation, has started up a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility with storage and vaporisation capabilities in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Facilities like the Carlisle site use cryogenic technology, cooling natural gas to around –162°C so it can be stored as a super-cold liquid in insulated tanks.
When demand spikes – usually in the winter – the LNG is warmed through on-site vaporisers and returned to a gaseous state before being sent into the pipeline system for distribution.
This type of “peak-shaving” system helps ensure supply during cold-weather surges and reduces strain on regional pipeline capacity.
