German multinational energy firm Uniper has signed a letter of interest with Canada’s proposed Ksi Lisims liquefied natural gas (LNG) project on the northwest coast of British Columbia, marking another Germany–Canada LNG agreement in close succession.
Under a pending long-term agreement, Uniper plans to offtake two million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG from the Ksi Lisims 12 mtpa floating export facility to diversify its LNG portfolio.
It follows a between Germany’s Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) and Ksi Lisims LNG for one mtpa, highlighting accelerating LNG trade links between Canada and Germany.
Ksi Lisims LNG is targeting a final investment decision (FID) by the end of 2026, with commercial start-up expected in 2029. Uniper expects first delivery of LNG to be possible in 2032.
Davis Thames, CEO and President of Western LNG, said, “This project, and Europe’s interest in it, demonstrates how energy security, climate responsibility, and community-focused economic development can be achieved together.”
Germany’s agreements with Canada come as Ottawa looks to diversify export markets beyond the US and expand LNG exports into European and Asian markets.
A from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) stated the US could supply 80% of European LNG imports by 2028.
