Vietnam has taken a major step in its clean energy journey with the opening of a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) factory by GG Power in Hung Yen province. The facility was officially inaugurated on April 11 and is expected to strengthen the country’s growing renewable energy ecosystem. With an annual production capacity of 5GWh, the plant marks an important move toward building domestic manufacturing capabilities in the energy storage sector.

The project has been developed with an initial investment of around $12 million (VND300 billion) and covers an area of 1.2 hectares. The factory is equipped with advanced technology, featuring more than 90 percent automation, which will help improve efficiency and reduce production time. It also includes a dedicated research and development center to support innovation and the creation of new storage solutions. The plant will manufacture batteries for various applications, including residential, commercial, industrial, and utility-scale projects.

A key highlight of the project is its partnership with Goldwind. Through a technology transfer and licensing agreement, GG Power has gained access to advanced technical expertise. While GG Power will have full control over its research and development activities, Goldwind will continue to provide technical support and training. This collaboration is expected to ensure that the factory operates according to international standards and keeps up with the latest advancements in maintenance and performance technologies.

The Vietnamese government has shown strong support for the project. During the inauguration, Nguyen Hoang Long highlighted the importance of developing locally manufactured clean energy equipment. The government is working on policy changes to encourage domestic production and reduce reliance on imports. GG Power has also set a target to localize more than 50 percent of its supply chain by 2026, which could boost local industries and create new job opportunities.

This development comes at a time when Vietnam is increasing its focus on renewable energy. Under the Power Development Plan 8, the country aims to install between 10GW and 16.3GW of energy storage capacity by 2030. This goal reflects the need to improve grid stability as solar and wind energy capacity continues to grow.

With supportive policies and rising demand for clean energy, Vietnam is becoming an attractive destination for battery manufacturing. The GG Power factory adds to the presence of global companies like Fluence and Gotion, signaling strong competition and growth in the country’s green technology sector.
