VinEnergo Seeks Environmental Clearance For Two Floating Solar Projects Worth $418 Million In Vietnam

VinEnergo, the renewable energy subsidiary of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, is seeking environmental clearance for two floating solar power projects in Lai Chau province in northern Vietnam. The proposed developments represent a significant investment in the country’s renewable energy sector, with a combined estimated capital expenditure exceeding ₹3,500 crore. The total investment is equivalent to more than VND 10.8 trillion, or approximately USD 418.18 million.

The two projects are planned to utilise available water surfaces for installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. Floating solar technology allows developers to generate electricity without requiring large areas of land, making it particularly suitable for regions with challenging geographical conditions. Lai Chau, located in Vietnam’s mountainous northern region, offers an opportunity to explore this technology while addressing limitations associated with conventional ground-mounted solar installations.

Through these initiatives, VinEnergo aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio and contribute to Vietnam’s efforts to increase clean electricity generation. The proposed installations are also expected to support the country’s growing electricity requirements, particularly in northern Vietnam, where demand for reliable power continues to increase.

The environmental clearance process is an important step towards advancing the projects. The company must secure the necessary regulatory approvals before proceeding with further development activities. The assessment process will examine the environmental implications of installing large-scale solar facilities on water bodies and ensure that the proposed developments meet applicable regulatory requirements.

Once the required clearances are obtained, the projects can progress towards subsequent development stages, including detailed planning, construction arrangements and implementation. However, specific details regarding their individual capacities, project locations, development timelines and expected commercial operation dates have not yet been disclosed in the provided information.

The proposed investments highlight the growing interest in floating solar technology across Southeast Asia. For VinEnergo, the two developments could strengthen its position in the renewable energy market while supporting Vietnam’s broader transition towards a more diversified and sustainable electricity generation mix.
