Volkswagen Group Africa Expands Solar Power Capacity To 5.2 MWp With Completion Of Phase Two At Kariega Plant

Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) has successfully completed the second phase of its solar photovoltaic (PV) carport project at the Kariega manufacturing plant, strengthening its commitment to renewable energy and sustainable automotive production. The expansion forms part of the company’s long-term strategy to transition its operations toward cleaner and more efficient energy systems.

The solar project, located in the employee car park and service centre area, began in 2022 and has advanced through multiple phases. The first phase, completed in 2024, installed 5,712 panels delivering a capacity of 3.1 MWp. This initial stage demonstrated the plant’s potential to integrate solar generation into its operational energy needs and served as the foundation for future expansion.

The recently completed second phase adds a further 2.1 MWp of renewable capacity through the installation of 3,582 solar panels, each rated at 585W. This phase is projected to supply approximately 2,699 MWh of clean energy annually. VWGA invested R35 million in the second phase, contributing to a total capital investment of R90 million across the entire project.

With both phases now finalized, the total solar capacity reaches 5.2 MWp, capable of producing an estimated 7,125 MWh of solar electricity per year. This increased generation is expected to significantly enhance energy sustainability at the Kariega plant and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based power sources.

Ulrich Schwabe, Production Director at Volkswagen Group Africa, emphasized the importance of the achievement, stating that completing the second phase represents a major milestone in the company’s ambition to achieve fully sustainable manufacturing. He noted that the solar project reflects the organization’s commitment to clean energy adoption and environmental responsibility.

The successful expansion reinforces VWGA’s broader sustainability strategy and supports global automotive industry trends toward decarbonization, improved energy resilience, and reduced operational emissions.
