Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation Reaches Financial Close For Jinbi Solar Project In Australia

In May 2026, the Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation (YEC) achieved an important milestone by reaching financial close for the Jinbi Solar Project, one of Australia’s biggest Indigenous-led renewable energy developments. The achievement confirms that all funding arrangements, contracts, and approvals have been completed, allowing the project to move into the construction stage after several years of planning and preparation.

The Jinbi Solar Project is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and is being developed through a partnership between Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation and ACEN Corporation. The project will be built on Yindjibarndi Ngurra, also known as Yindjibarndi Country, with the traditional owners playing a leading role in the project’s development and future benefits.

One of the major highlights of the announcement is the signing of a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with mining giant Rio Tinto. Through this long-term agreement, Rio Tinto will purchase all renewable electricity generated during the first phase of the project. The clean power will support the company’s iron ore operations in the Pilbara region and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of its sustainability goals.

The first stage of the project will include a 75-megawatt alternating current (MWac) solar facility. Developers have also announced future expansion plans that could increase the project’s capacity to 150 megawatts. In addition, large-scale battery energy storage systems may be added in the future to improve reliability and provide a stable power supply during periods when solar generation is lower.

Construction activities have already started, with local contractors and partners beginning early site preparation work. The project is expected to become fully operational by the middle of 2028. The development is also expected to create employment opportunities and economic benefits for local Indigenous communities throughout the construction and operational phases.

Leaders from YEC and Rio Tinto described the project as more than just a renewable energy initiative. They emphasized that the Jinbi Solar Project represents a new model for industrial development in Australia, where Indigenous leadership, cultural values, and community participation are placed at the center of major infrastructure projects. By combining traditional knowledge with modern renewable energy technology, the project aims to deliver long-term environmental, social, and economic benefits while supporting Australia’s clean energy transition.
