UK- and US-based Origen has commissioned a new kiln equipped with direct air capture technology to decarbonise lime production at the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) in the US state of North Dakota.

The kiln, which is more than seven stories tall, is capable of cutting over 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide output per year in an industry that generates up to 0.75 tonnes of carbon dioxide per tonne of quicklime, according to Origen.

It does this by harnessing limestone’s natural ability to capture CO2. The process reverses the high-temperature calcination process, which releases CO2 from the limestone to create lime.

The lime acts as a sponge by absorbing CO2 from the air, converting back into limestone in a process called carbonation or mineralisation.
