TotalEnergies, in collaboration with its partners QatarEnergy and Basra Oil Company, today announced the launch of the final phase of Iraq’s Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), a major milestone that brings together solar, oil, gas, and water infrastructure developments to support Iraq’s energy transition and sustainable growth.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting in Baghdad between Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, and His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs and Chief Executive Officer of QatarEnergy. The event was attended by His Excellency Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Prime Minister of Iraq, and His Excellency Hayan Abulghani, Minister of Oil and Deputy Prime Minister.
The final phase includes the award of two critical contracts—the Common Seawater Supply Project (CSSP) and the full field development of the Ratawi oil field—completing the execution phase of the GGIP. With TotalEnergies as operator (45%) and in partnership with Basra Oil Company (30%) and QatarEnergy (25%), the GGIP is a flagship multi-energy initiative designed to enhance Iraq’s electricity supply, strengthen energy security, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Supporting Iraq’s Water and Energy Needs
The CSSP, located near the coastal town of Um Qasr, will process and transport up to 5 million barrels of seawater daily to southern Iraq’s oil fields, replacing freshwater currently drawn from the Tigris, Euphrates, and underground aquifers. This project is expected to alleviate regional water stress and free up 250,000 cubic meters of freshwater daily for agricultural use.
Meanwhile, the Ratawi oil field redevelopment aims to expand production from 120,000 barrels per day (bpd) in Phase 1 by early 2026 to 210,000 bpd in Phase 2 by 2028—all with zero routine flaring, reinforcing Iraq’s commitment to sustainable oil production.
Maximizing Associated Gas and Electricity Supply
Associated gas from Ratawi, totaling 160 Mcf/d, will be fully processed through the 300 Mcf/d Gas Midstream Project (GMP), which began construction earlier this year. The GMP will also capture previously flared gas from other fields and feed approximately 1.5 GW of electricity into Iraq’s national grid, serving an estimated 1.5 million households. An Early Production facility is set to process 50 Mcf/d of associated gas from early 2026.
Driving Economic Growth and Employment
“We are proud to mark this important step in the realization of the GGIP, particularly the long-awaited seawater treatment project which will have a profound impact on Iraq’s oil and water sectors,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. “In less than two years since the GGIP’s inception, we have delivered on our commitments and are well on track to start-up the first phase of associated gas, oil, and solar projects by early 2026. These projects will create significant economic opportunities, employing 7,000 Iraqi nationals during construction and providing vital energy resources for the country’s future.”
The GGIP stands as a testament to Iraq’s vision for a diversified and sustainable energy future, with TotalEnergies and its partners committed to supporting the nation’s growth while addressing critical environmental and resource challenges.
