Microsoft has announced a collaboration with Powertrust to support the development of 270 megawatts of solar projects in Mexico and Brazil over the next four years through the purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs). The initiative will also incorporate social impact components in communities with limited access to clean energy.

Under the agreement, Microsoft will acquire RECs generated by Powertrust’s solar projects, reinforcing its commitment to become carbon negative by 2030. The move aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to reduce emissions by investing in high-impact and sustainable energy solutions worldwide.

Powertrust stated that the solar portfolio will provide direct benefits to low-income households and community organizations, including savings on electricity bills. The projects are expected to generate local employment and provide training in photovoltaic installation and maintenance. Collaborations with civil society organizations and community leaders will ensure participatory project planning and implementation from the early stages.

The agreement also includes initiatives aimed at enhancing education, health, and community infrastructure in areas where the solar systems are deployed. Powertrust noted that these measures reflect its model for distributed renewable energy projects with social components in emerging markets.

Executives from both organizations emphasized that the partnership seeks to accelerate solar infrastructure development in Latin America. Powertrust highlighted that the project is part of its renewable energy procurement platform in emerging markets, designed to support international companies in achieving their emissions reduction targets.
