NIPSCO Receives Federal Order to Keep Indiana Coal Plant Running

Dec 24 (Reuters) – Northern Indiana Public Service Company on Wednesday said it has received a federal order requiring the continued operation of R.M. Schahfer generating station beyond its planned December 31, 2025, retirement date.

The order directs the Indiana-based plant to remain open for 90 days from the date of the order, the firm added.

The directive comes as several U.S. utilities delay coal plant retirements to meet rising power demand, driven by surging requests for new capacity from data centers and higher natural gas costs, which have prompted a shift back to coal generation.

U.S. President Donald Trump has also been advocating for increased coal production in the U.S., and signed executive orders in April aiming to boost coal use.

U.S. utility NiSource (NI.N) Inc-owned NIPSCO had earlier said it intended to retire the remaining two coal units at the Schahfer plant by the end of 2025.

“We are reviewing the overall impact to our customers and company and will comply with this order, and any subsequent orders, if received,” NIPSCO President and Chief Operating Officer Vince Parisi said in a statement.
