Renewable energy producer Axpo and private energy and commodity trading firm Vitol have completed the first liquefied natural gas bunkering operation at the port of Civitavecchia in western Italy.

Green Pearl, a 7,500 cubic metre Italian bunkering vessel operated by Axpo, conducted the ship-to-ship refuelling operation.

Axpo Italia CEO Simone Demarchi said, “Over the coming years, the shipping and cruise sectors will be called upon to accelerate their decarbonisation journey. Today, LNG is one of the most substantial and readily available solutions to help support this transition.”

Stefan Dubbeldam, Vitol Head of Small Scale LNG & LNG Bunkering, added that LNG and bio-LNG have a key role to play in reducing emissions from bunkering.

Italy’s premier cruise port and Europe’s second largest now joins Genoa and Naples in offering LNG refuelling services.

German cruise operator TUI Cruises has with two vessels now operating entirely or substantially on the renewable fuel across European cruises.

The company’s dual-fuel Mein Schiff Relax vessel is running on the renewable fuel for its Northern European itineraries during the 2026 summer season.

Germany-based construction engineering company TGE Marine has completed an engineering retrofit designed to improve the performance of its boil-off gas compression system.
