Norway’s Avinor begins liquefied biogas power pilot at Arctic airport

Norway-based state-owned airport operator Avinor has launched a pilot project using liquefied biogas to generate electricity and heat at Svalbard Airport in Norway.

The combined heat and power (CHP) plant is designed to deliver 100% of the airport’s on-site electricity and heating needs once fully operational. The system runs on liquefied biogas and is currently in a trial phase that will last around one year.

According to Avinor, emissions from electricity and heating at Svalbard Airport accounted for approximately 20% of the company’s total emissions in 2022.

“This is a very important climate measure for Avinor,” said Anders Kirsebom, Chair of the Board of Svalbard Airport. “With this solution, we are taking a clear step in the right direction.”
