Danish cleantech developer Topsoe has been chosen by China-based renewable fuels developer Tangshan Jinlihai to supply its technology for a large-scale sustainable aviation fuel project.

The $210m project will use waste oil as feedstock to produce SAF at the Caofeidian National Petrochemical Base in Tangshan, Hebei Province. It is expected to enable the avoidance of around 700,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.

Topsoe’s Hydroflex technology turns feedstocks such as used cooking oil or vegetable oils into drop-in renewable diesel and jet fuel. For this project, the technology will process up to 300,000 tonnes of feedstock each year.

The process uses hydrogen at high temperatures and pressures in a catalytic reactor to remove oxygen from feedstocks, making the resulting fuels chemically identical to petroleum products.
