Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) continues its commitment to sustainable development in Hatta, reflecting the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. DEWA’s ambitious initiatives in the region aim to position Hatta as a global model for harmony between humans and nature through innovation and sustainable solutions.

In December 2024, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inaugurated the AED 60 million Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls project. The initiative leverages the slope of the upper dam of Hatta’s Hydroelectric Power Plant to create a natural waterfall and features the world’s largest mosaic mural, which was recognized by Guinness World Records. Covering 2,199 square meters and constructed with 1.2 million pieces of natural marble, the mosaic honors the UAE’s Founding Fathers.

The waterfall project integrates eco-tourism and community development with four main oases, retail outlets, restaurants, and cafes, designed in a beehive-inspired hexagonal shape. DEWA has also provided these retail spaces free of charge to local Emiratis, fostering economic growth and employment opportunities in the area.

To bolster Dubai’s clean energy goals, DEWA is constructing a 250MW pumped storage hydroelectric power plant in Hatta. With a storage capacity of 1,500 MWh and a lifespan of 80 years, the plant will use advanced turbines powered by clean energy, achieving a 90-second response to electricity demand. The project aligns with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050.

DEWA has also installed rooftop photovoltaic panels on 554 villas in Hatta, generating 3,612,357 kWh of energy annually and reducing CO₂ emissions by 2,159 tonnes.

DEWA has expanded water infrastructure in Hatta with a 30-million-imperial-gallon desalinated water reservoir and microfiltration units to refine water for emergency use. Collaborative projects with Etihad WE and TRANSCO ensure additional water supply and interconnection for emergencies.

In 2021, DEWA built the Al Rayyan Mosque in Hatta, which became the world’s first mosque to achieve LEED ZERO certification. The mosque produces 150% of its annual energy needs via solar panels and includes sustainable features like water recycling for irrigation, air purification systems, and facilities for People of Determination.

DEWA’s projects emphasize preserving the natural beauty of the Hatta Mountain Reserve while advancing Dubai’s sustainability goals. By incorporating renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering local economic opportunities, DEWA supports Hatta’s transformation into a sustainable tourism and investment hub.
