The UAE has reinforced its position as a global leader in the clean energy transition, showcasing innovative projects that enhance energy security and sustainability while driving international collaboration.

On the International Day of Clean Energy, marked annually on January 26, the UAE’s achievements highlight its commitment to renewable energy and a sustainable future. This day, which coincides with the founding anniversary of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), underscores the global consensus on prioritizing clean energy as essential for environmental protection, sustainable development, and economic growth.

Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, UAE’s Permanent Representative to IRENA, praised the nation’s leadership in spearheading the initiative to designate January 26 as the International Day of Clean Energy. Dr. Al-Hosany highlighted the UAE’s role in fostering global investments in renewable energy, particularly in climate-vulnerable regions, and its commitment to expanding a climate-resilient green economy.

Milestone Projects in Clean Energy

The UAE continues to lead with groundbreaking projects:

  • World’s First Large-Scale Solar and Battery Project: Abu Dhabi launched a gigascale project combining solar power and battery storage. The facility, with a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic plant and a 19GWh battery energy storage system, delivers up to 1GW of renewable baseload power daily, setting a global benchmark.
  • Al Ajban Solar PV Project: Set for completion by late 2026, the project will generate 1.5GW of electricity and reduce emissions by 2.4 million tonnes annually, positioning it among the world’s largest independent solar plants.

These initiatives contribute to the UAE’s clean energy capacity target of 14.2GW by 2030 and its Paris Agreement commitments.

Major Achievements in Clean Energy Production

The UAE hosts three of the largest solar power plants globally and has added more clean electricity per capita in the last six years than any other nation. The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant plays a pivotal role, producing 88,000 GWh of clean electricity to date, meeting 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs and reducing carbon emissions by over 43 million tonnes.

Advancing Nuclear and Clean Energy Technologies

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) is exploring advanced nuclear energy technologies, including small modular reactors and clean hydrogen. It also aims to establish a regional nuclear energy hub and supply chain to bolster global partnerships.

Global Impact

With initiatives like the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and Barakah Nuclear Plant, the UAE is shaping a sustainable future that blends innovation with environmental stewardship, setting a global standard for clean energy leadership.

As the UAE continues to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio, it underscores its dedication to fostering international collaboration, achieving climate goals, and ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
