Northern Lights CCS project adds third CO2 carrier

The Northern Lights carbon capture and storage joint venture has added a third liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier to its fleet.

The newest vessel, Northern Phoenix, launched from Bergen in Norway and will transport captured CO2 from Norwegian chemical giant Yara to the JV’s receiving terminal in , where it will be stored around 2.6km beneath the seabed.

“With our first two ships already in operation, Northern Phoenix marks the next step in scaling our CO2 shipping capacity,” said Tim Heijn, Managing Director of Northern Lights.

Northern Lights offers CO2 transport and storage-as-a-service and started the first injection of LCO2 for permanent storage in August 2025.
