The Ammonia Energy Association (AEA) will launch a new voluntary green ammonia certification scheme in partnership with non-profit methane regulation organisation MiQ.
Using the MiQ-operated Ammonia Registry – a digital tracing platform for the molecule across the supply chain – the scheme will allow producers, traders, and consumers to validate environmental attributes of ammonia through independent data verification.
It follows a pilot scheme launched in late 2025, which introduced certification for operational and pre-production facilities, alongside a framework for the transfer of certifications across the value chain.
According to the AEA, participants of the pilot phase are currently preparing initial audits before certifications are awarded.
A firm date for a full roll out has not yet been announced.
Vibeke Rasmussen of fertiliser major Yara, who is also President of the AEA, said that certification is key to the growth of the clean ammonia market.
Green ammonia continues to gain traction as a decarbonisation pathway across hard-to-abate sectors, with established demand in fertilisers and chemicals, and growing interest in maritime fuel and power generation applications.
However, as with hydrogen and its other derivatives, production continues to be dominated by fossil fuel-based processes.
Various bodies have launched schemes aimed at aligning the verification of low-carbon ammonia to improve transparency, de-risk investment decisions, and facilitate cross-border trade.
In early 2025, Ammonia Europe launched a awarding a per tonne Ammonia Certificate.
The Fertilizer Institute also recently recognised downstream fertilisers such as nitric acid, ammonium nitrate, urea, and urea ammonium nitrate, enabling verification across the full ammonia value chain under its carbon certification scheme.
