US liquefied natural gas (LNG) firm Lantern LNG has selected energy solutions company Honeywell as its technology partner for a 12 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) offshore LNG project in Texas.
Train 1 of the Matagorda Bay site is targeting a 2029 final investment decision, with first LNG expected in late 2031. Later phases are expected to reach FID in 2031 and 2032, respectively.
Honeywell’s LNG technology will support production and provide data to inform project development and execution. Specifically, the firm will provide pre-treatment, liquefaction, and heat exchanger technology.
David Chung, CEO of Lantern LNG, added, “By bringing pretreatment, liquefaction, controls, and lifecycle support under one investment-grade provider, we are taking an important step.”
The Matagorda Bay site is Lantern LNG’s first LNG project. The company says that by leveraging a modular, platform-based design, it can eliminate the need for onshore storage tanks and dredging, resulting in a lower project cost.
Lantern LNG selected the site for the Matagorda Bay project in November 2025.
According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), in 2024, the US was the world’s largest LNG exporter, and Texas’s three existing LNG export terminals handled about 31% of the country’s exports.
