Finnish utility Fortum has launched its €20m ($23.2m) Kalla hydrogen testing centre in Loviisa, Finland, which will compare two electrolyser technologies, as it targets full operations in the summer.
The facility will test electrolyser systems from Estonia’s Stargate Hydrogen and Norway’s Hystar to assess the performance, flexibility, durability, and scalability of alkaline and PEM technologies to support power-to-X projects.
Fortum told H2 View the centre is ready for piloting operations, with both the 1MW alkaline system from Stargate – which produced the site’s first hydrogen in December 2025 – and Hystar’s 750kW PEM system now integrated.
Satu Sipola, Vice-President at Fortum, said the news marks a “critical step” in progressing from initial commissioning to structured testing.
Kalla is located near the Loviisa nuclear power plant and will draw electricity from the grid and use household water sources to produce hydrogen.
While PEM and alkaline systems are the most commercially deployed electrolysers, the facility could deepen understanding as developers seek to scale hydrogen production and lower costs.
Stargate Hydrogen recently entered a with Seacht Group, targeting green hydrogen projects in the UK as part of its wider European growth strategy.
