Sunfire boss Nils Aldag has warned Europe risks a “slow death” without protection for its electrolyser industry, calling for firmer action to preserve what he believes is still a technical edge over China.
Speaking to press at the World Hydrogen Summit, the CEO of the German electrolyser maker said Europe should reserve taxpayer-backed hydrogen projects for European suppliers.
Although Aldag said Chinese-made electrolysers still suffer from quality and safety issues, he warned the speed at which Chinese manufacturers can adapt and improve products underlined the urgency for Europe to act.
“It is not acceptable to spend European taxpayers’ money on non-European equipment and fund the upscaling journey of non-European suppliers,” he said.
