Thailand’s leading private power producer, Gulf Energy Development, is strengthening its presence in Vietnam’s energy sector as the country continues to expand its electricity infrastructure and transition toward cleaner energy sources. The company recently held discussions with Vietnam Electricity (EVN) in Hanoi to explore opportunities for greater cooperation in renewable energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.
The meeting was attended by EVN Chairman Dang Hoang An and a Gulf Energy delegation led by Chaichawin Tantiyankul, CEO of the company’s Southeast Asia Energy Division. Both sides discussed plans to accelerate the development of wind power and LNG projects that can help meet Vietnam’s rapidly growing electricity demand while supporting its low-carbon development goals.
The cooperation reflects a broader commitment between Thailand and Vietnam to promote sustainable economic growth and energy security. During a recent official visit to Thailand, Vietnamese President To Lam encouraged Thai businesses to increase high-quality investments in Vietnam. In response, Gulf Energy Chief Executive Officer Sarath Ratanavadi reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to the Vietnamese market and highlighted its intention to contribute to the country’s energy transition through clean energy investments.
Gulf Energy has already established a significant presence in Vietnam’s renewable energy sector through a range of projects and partnerships. In the solar energy segment, the company joined hands with TTC Group to develop two large solar power plants in Tay Ninh province. The first project, TTC Project No. 1, has a capacity of 68.8 MWp, while TTC Project No. 2 adds another 50 MWp. Together, the two facilities represent an investment of more than $115 million and contribute renewable electricity to Vietnam’s power system.
The company has also invested heavily in wind energy. Gulf Energy currently operates three nearshore wind farms in Vinh Long province with a combined installed capacity of 128 MW. These projects are supplying clean electricity to Vietnam’s national grid and helping diversify the country’s energy mix.
Looking ahead, Gulf Energy plans to further expand its wind energy portfolio through the development of the Binh Dai offshore wind project in Ben Tre province. The project is expected to reach a capacity of 310 MW, making it one of the company’s most significant renewable energy developments in the country.
EVN has welcomed Gulf Energy’s continued interest in Vietnam and expressed support for its project studies and development plans. The utility noted that the proposed renewable energy and LNG projects are aligned with national energy planning and environmental objectives. EVN also encouraged Gulf Energy to work closely with local authorities to accelerate project implementation and support Vietnam’s efforts to strengthen energy security while advancing its clean energy transition.
