Japan power generation firm Jera is setting up a new division in Singapore which will target growth in liquefied natural gas, upstream, lower carbon fuels and shipping.
Jera Global Energy Solutions (GES) aims to response “quickly to market needs” while maintaining security of supply for Japan as its highest priority, after the Far East economic powerhouse was left vulnerable from the crisis in the Middle East, which accounts for 95% of its crude oil and 11% of its LNG imports.
One major focus will be on advancing lower carbon fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen.
Separately, Jera signed a memorandum of understanding with Thai state-owned power firm EGAT today (1 July), to explore opportunities around both gases in Thailand.
Irtiza H. Sayyed has been appointed CEO of Jera GES and Ryosuke Tsugari will be Chief Low Carbon Fuel Officer.
Yukio Kani, Jera’s Global CEO and Chair, said the establishment of Jera GES represents an important step in strengthening its operating model for the next phase of its growth.
“By bringing greater focus, accountability and specialisation to our long-term LNG and lower-carbon fuels portfolio, Jera is better positioned to respond to changing market conditions while continuing to support stable energy supply,” he said, adding it will create a stronger, more integrated LNG platform.
Last month Jera took another step towards establishing what it claims to be Japan’s first , securing four very large gas carrier vessels (VLGCs) to transport ammonia from the US Gulf Coast to Japan.
To ensure the steady supply of green ammonia, Jera has partnered with CF Industries and Mitsui & Co. to build the Blue Point Project in Louisiana, which aims to launch in 2029. It has also demonstrated the world’s first commercial-scale demonstration of 20% ammonia combustion in a large coal-fired unit at the Hekinan Thermal Power Station.
Acme Group and IHI’s joint venture recently secured Japanese government backing for , with seven industrial companies set to buy its output from 2030.
