Indian Stock Market Slump Drags Green Energy and Power Stocks Lower on July 8

Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on July 8, 2026, with broad-based selling dragging benchmark indices and most green energy, power, and mobility stocks into negative territory. Weak market sentiment weighed on investor confidence, resulting in significant declines across renewable energy, clean technology, and energy infrastructure companies.

The S&P BSE SENSEX declined 2.15% to close at 76,503.60 points, while the NIFTY 50 dropped 2.06% to settle at 23,895.70 points. The overall market correction was reflected across the green energy sector, where only a handful of companies managed to post gains by the end of the trading session.

Exide Industries stood out as the strongest performer among green energy-related stocks. The company’s shares gained 1.21% on the BSE to close at Rs 419.40, while its NSE-listed shares advanced 1.59% to end the day at Rs 421.10. NTPC Green Energy Ltd. also remained in positive territory, registering modest gains of 0.11% on the BSE and 0.14% on the NSE, with both exchanges closing at Rs 92.80.

On the losing side, Websol Energy and the Indian Energy Exchange recorded the steepest declines. Websol Energy dropped 4.38% on the BSE to Rs 97.25 and 4.20% on the NSE to Rs 97.40. The Indian Energy Exchange also witnessed heavy selling, falling 4.29% on the BSE and 4.30% on the NSE to close at Rs 117.20 on both exchanges. Inox Wind also came under pressure, declining 3.72% to Rs 82.98 on the BSE. State-owned energy companies GAIL and IOC each lost around 3%, reflecting the broader weakness across the energy sector.

Several large-cap companies also ended the day lower. Larsen & Toubro fell 2.29% to Rs 3,900.00, while Reliance Industries declined 2.44% to close at Rs 1,274.75. In the power segment, Tata Power slipped 1.25% to Rs 372.50, and JSW Energy eased 0.77% to Rs 539.60.

Other renewable energy companies also witnessed losses. Adani Green Energy declined 0.50% to Rs 1,511.10, while Amara Raja Energy & Mobility fell 0.50% to Rs 838.00. Borosil Renewables dropped 1.64% to Rs 598.00, Praj Industries lost 1.50% to Rs 355.45, Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy declined 2.84% to Rs 232.90, Olectra Greentech slipped 1.23% to Rs 1,400.00, and Insolation Energy fell 2.81% to close at Rs 109.00. The day’s trading reflected broad-based selling pressure across the renewable energy and power sectors despite a few isolated gainers.
