SunPower Completes 977 kW Solar Carport System at California Residential Community

SunPower Inc. has completed a 977 kW solar carport system at the Millennium Project, a 330-unit residential community in Palm Desert, California. The project is expected to generate more than 1.6 million kWh of clean electricity annually, supporting the community’s long-term energy needs while providing shaded parking for residents.

The installation was delivered for PearlX, owner of the Millennium Project, under its Energy Estate model, which integrates distributed clean energy infrastructure into residential communities. According to the company, the solar system is backed by a 30-year performance commitment and is designed to reduce electricity costs while improving energy resilience for residents.

Guy Winters, President of PearlX, said the project demonstrates the company’s Energy Estate approach by delivering long-term infrastructure that benefits property owners and residents alike. He added that the successful execution of the project reinforces PearlX’s plans to expand its partnership with SunPower on future developments.

Alongside the project completion, SunPower announced that it received a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 90 for the Millennium installation, reflecting customer satisfaction with the project delivery. The company described the score as a milestone in its ongoing customer transformation programme.

SunPower CEO T.J. Rodgers said the solar carport structure combines functional design with clean energy generation by replacing conventional roofing with solar panels that both generate electricity and provide shade for vehicles. He noted that the project illustrates how distributed solar infrastructure can deliver multiple long-term benefits to residential communities.

Rodgers also acknowledged that the company’s overall customer satisfaction has been recovering following its acquisition of the former SunPower business after its bankruptcy. He said the company’s aggregate NPS improved from -25 in the second quarter of 2025 and continues to improve each quarter, with a target of achieving an NPS above 70 by the second quarter of 2027.

Highlighting broader market opportunities, Rodgers cited industry data indicating that the average cost of residential solar installations in California has declined to approximately US$2.47 per watt, with typical payback periods of about 7.3 years through electricity bill savings. He also noted that only 15% of California homes and around 7% of homes across the United States that are suitable for rooftop solar have installed systems, leaving significant room for future residential solar adoption.
