CS PowerTech Inc., a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. and the largest silicon photovoltaic (PV) solar manufacturer in the United States, has officially inaugurated the first phase of its flagship PV cell manufacturing facility at the River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
The Jeffersonville PVCells facility marks a key milestone in the company’s U.S. manufacturing strategy, aimed at reshoring advanced solar manufacturing, strengthening domestic supply chain resilience, and enhancing the country’s energy security.
According to the company, the facility is the first U.S.-based PV cell manufacturing plant designed to produce heterojunction (HJT) bifacial N-type solar cells. Together with CS PowerTech’s module manufacturing facility in Mesquite, Texas, the Jeffersonville plant establishes a localized and vertically integrated solar manufacturing supply chain to serve the U.S. market.
Once fully operational, the facility is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of more than 6 GWp, support over 1,200 skilled manufacturing, engineering, and technical jobs in Southern Indiana, and represent nearly US$1 billion in local investment.
Rusty Schmit, President of CS PowerTech Inc., said the Jeffersonville facility is a cornerstone of the company’s strategy to build one of North America’s most advanced energy manufacturing supply chains. He noted that the plant will manufacture next-generation HJT solar cells, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, and improve grid reliability while supporting long-term investment in Indiana’s workforce.
Colin Parkin, Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Solar Inc., said the facility demonstrates the company’s commitment to expanding advanced solar cell manufacturing in the United States. He added that HJT technology is critical for the next generation of high-efficiency solar modules, enabling improved energy yield and long-term value for customers while strengthening domestic advanced manufacturing.
The inauguration was welcomed by state and local leaders, including Indiana Governor Mike Braun, who said the investment reinforces Indiana’s position as a hub for advanced manufacturing while creating high-quality jobs. Indiana State Senator Chris Garten, State Representative Wendy Dant Chesser, Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore, and River Ridge Development Authority Executive Director Marc Hildenbrand also highlighted the project’s role in driving regional economic development, expanding advanced manufacturing capabilities, and positioning Southern Indiana as a center for clean energy technology.
CS PowerTech said the Jeffersonville facility will continue ramping up production over the coming months to reach full phase-one capacity, while work on the second phase of the expansion is expected to begin before the end of the year.
