The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has completed the installation of a solar power generation system at Marina South Pier (MSP), marking an important step in its efforts to promote cleaner energy and reduce carbon emissions. The achievement also coincides with the 20th anniversary of Marina South Pier, which has been serving as a key passenger ferry terminal since it opened in 2006.
Marina South Pier replaced Clifford Pier and has since become Singapore’s main gateway for ferry services to the Southern Islands. In addition to passenger transport, the terminal plays an important role in supporting crew changes for ships berthed at the Port of Singapore, making it a critical part of the country’s maritime infrastructure.
The newly completed solar installation is expected to lower greenhouse gas emissions from the pier’s shore-based operations. It also supports the Singapore government’s GreenGov.SG initiative, which encourages public sector agencies to improve sustainability and adopt cleaner energy solutions across their facilities.
As part of the project, MPA installed 1,092 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels across around 3,200 square metres of rooftop and canopy space at Marina South Pier. The panels are designed to harness solar energy efficiently and generate clean electricity throughout the year.
The system is expected to produce up to 780,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually. According to MPA, this amount of electricity is roughly equal to the yearly power consumption of about 180 four-room HDB flats. The renewable electricity generated will supply a substantial share of the pier’s daily energy needs, reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
To maximise the benefits of the new solar system, MPA plans to progressively upgrade the electrical infrastructure at Marina South Pier. These improvements will help optimise the use of solar energy while also supporting the growing demand for charging electric harbour craft operating at the terminal, contributing to the maritime sector’s transition towards cleaner transportation.
The Marina South Pier project forms part of MPA’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy use across its shore-based facilities. As part of this wider effort, the authority is also replacing diesel generators on Pulau Satumu with renewable energy systems. MPA expects the island to operate entirely on renewable electricity before the end of 2027, reinforcing Singapore’s long-term commitment to sustainable maritime operations and environmental protection.
