Europe’s Solar Manufacturing Capacity Set For Major Expansion To 88.2 GW By 2030 – Report

Europe’s solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing industry is entering a new phase of growth, with fresh investments and ambitious expansion plans replacing the factory closures and financial struggles that had challenged the sector in recent years. According to the latest Europe Solar Supply Chain Map (Edition 1, 2026) released by technical compliance and quality assurance firm Sinovoltaics, the continent is shifting its focus toward strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity and building a more independent solar supply chain.

The report states that Europe currently has a solar module manufacturing capacity of 24.2 GW. However, announced expansion plans could increase this capacity to 88.2 GW between 2027 and 2030. The planned growth reflects a strong push by manufacturers and investors to establish a larger and more competitive solar manufacturing base across the region.

Five major projects and new manufacturers have been added to the latest edition of the supply chain map. These include Solar Organic Centro España, Solar Fabrik GmbH, RESILICON, Astronergy, and a joint initiative between JTPV and Schmid-Pekintaş. Their entry highlights continued investment across different parts of the solar value chain and signals growing confidence in Europe’s long-term clean energy ambitions.

While module manufacturing remains an important part of the expansion, the report points out that Europe is placing greater emphasis on strengthening upstream manufacturing. Planned investments cover the production of solar cells, silicon wafers, ingots, and polysilicon, which are essential components used before modules are assembled. Expanding these upstream industries is seen as a key step toward reducing dependence on imported materials and creating a more integrated local supply chain.

The report also notes that significant challenges remain before these plans become reality. Many of the proposed upstream facilities and large-scale manufacturing projects are still in the planning or construction stages. Moving them into full commercial production will require continued policy support from governments, access to long-term financing, and stable market demand for solar products.

According to Sinovoltaics, the success of these projects will depend on creating favorable conditions that encourage manufacturers to complete their investments and operate competitively within the European market. Without sustained financial and regulatory support, some planned capacities could face delays or other implementation challenges.

The company tracks new projects, production capacity, and industry trends to provide insights into the evolving renewable energy manufacturing landscape.
