Canadian clean energy firm StormFisher Environmental – a subsidiary of Generate Upcycle – is to receive nearly C$19m ($13.7m) funding from the Canada government to expand its London Ontario anaerobic digestion (AD) facility.
The largest food waste AD facility in Canada produces renewable natural gas (RNG) from municipal source-separated organics and industrial, commercial, institutional food and beverage waste. It can process up to 225,000 metric tonnes of food waste annually.
The investment will allow the facility to expand its RNG production capacity, increasing its ability to transform organic waste into low-carbon fuel and fertiliser which will be used on farms in Southwestern Ontario.
Once complete in 2027, the upgraded facility will have the capacity to produce an additional 450,000 gigajoules (GJ) of RNG and 86,000 tonnes of nutrient-rich organic fertiliser each year.
The Hon. Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, said it is leveraging homegrown innovation and existing resources into reliable, low-carbon energy while growing domestic clean fuel production and creating jobs.
Bill Caesar, President, Generate Upcycle, said Natural Resources Canada’s investment through the Clean Fuels Fund was integral to making the expansion possible.
“Public-private partnerships like this play an important role in scaling clean energy infrastructure,” he said.
Driven by its large agricultural sector, dense urban population centres, and supportive utility infrastructure, Ontario’s theoretical RNG capacity is a cornerstone of the country’s broader goal to quadruple national RNG production by 2028.
