Anza Power, an independent power producer launched by I Squared Capital, has signed a battery storage tolling agreement with Amazon Australia for the Bairnsdale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Victoria. The agreement was signed on September 2, 2026, marking an important development in Australia’s growing energy storage market.
The agreement covers the Bairnsdale BESS, a standalone battery storage project located in East Gippsland, Victoria. The facility has a capacity of 50 MW and 200 MWh, providing four hours of energy storage. Unlike hybrid renewable energy projects, the Bairnsdale facility is not co-located with a solar or wind power project and will be connected directly to the electricity grid.
The agreement is significant for Amazon’s renewable energy strategy in the Asia-Pacific region. It represents Amazon’s first standalone battery storage tolling agreement in APAC. The transaction also introduces a new type of storage arrangement in Australia involving a non-energy corporate buyer.
Under the agreement, the Bairnsdale BESS will store electricity and dispatch it to the National Electricity Market (NEM) when electricity demand is high. The battery is expected to support grid stability in the region while helping accommodate a growing share of intermittent renewable energy.
Energy storage systems such as Bairnsdale can play an important role in balancing electricity supply and demand. By charging when electricity is available and releasing power during periods of higher demand, battery projects can provide greater flexibility to the power system. This can also help improve the integration of renewable sources such as solar and wind.
For Anza Power, the agreement represents another step in expanding its clean energy portfolio since the company was launched by I Squared Capital in January 2026. I Squared Capital committed USD 300 million to support Anza Power’s growth.
The Bairnsdale agreement is Anza Power’s seventh clean energy offtake agreement since its launch. The company has previously signed five solar-plus-battery power purchase agreements with Amazon in April 2026. It also signed its inaugural agreement in New Zealand with Fonterra.
The latest agreement strengthens Anza Power’s presence in the Asia-Pacific clean energy market and highlights the increasing role of battery storage in supporting reliable electricity supply and renewable energy integration.
