Global technology firm Silicon Labs has opened an $80m chip design and testing research and development (R&D) centre at its Austin, Texas, headquarters.
The facility has been supported by a $23m grant from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF), established under the Texas CHIPS Act.
At the new location, Silicon Labs will be able to develop, test, and validate wireless chip technologies that underpin the Internet of Things (IoT) for connected devices and systems.
Matt Johnson, President and CEO of Silicon Labs, described the launch as an important milestone for both the company and Texas in advancing semiconductor innovation.
Silicon Labs’ TSIF grant was announced in early 2025 and marked the TSIF’s third grant.
The grant programme was launched in June 2023, following the Texas CHIPS Act legislation, and has since allocated $948m to support semiconductor research, manufacturing, and design in Texas.
This year, the TSIF has also issued state funding to US semiconductor companies ($24.2m), ($20.85m), ($4.83m), and ($3.9m), respectively.
