India has approved the export of electricity to Nepal for 18 hours a day from September 13 to December 31, 2026, to support the neighbouring country amid power shortages caused by recent floods.
The Ministry of Power has approved the supply of up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur–Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit transmission line. An additional 54 MW can be exported through the Tanakpur–Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
The power export will be available from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours each day during the approved period. The quantum of electricity to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed by the Ministry in December 2026.
Recent floods in Nepal have damaged several hydropower facilities, affecting the country’s domestic electricity generation capacity and increasing its requirement for power. The approval is expected to help Nepal manage the immediate supply gap and maintain reliable electricity availability during the difficult period.
The decision also reflects the longstanding energy partnership between India and Nepal. India has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, particularly through cross-border electricity trade and transmission connectivity.
