Abu Dhabi-based clean energy company Masdar has expanded its renewable energy activities in Azerbaijan after signing a collaboration agreement with Azerbaijan Green Energy Company (AGEC) to explore new clean energy projects across the country.
Under the agreement, Masdar and AGEC will assess the expansion of the existing 230MW Garadagh Solar PV project by adding at least 350MW of new solar capacity. The companies will also examine the deployment of a battery energy storage system with capacity of up to 200MWh to support grid stability and improve flexibility.
In addition, the two companies plan to investigate the development of a 100MW round-the-clock renewable energy project. The proposed project would combine renewable generation and supporting technologies to provide continuous clean electricity. Masdar said the concept builds on its experience in developing large-scale solar and battery storage projects in Abu Dhabi.
The collaboration agreement was signed during an official visit to Azerbaijan by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and National Security Adviser, alongside Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev. The companies are expected to combine their development, technical and operational expertise to support Azerbaijan’s growing electricity requirements.
Separately, Masdar and its co-developer SOCAR Green announced financial closure for the 315MW Neftchala Solar PV project. The project is being developed in partnership with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy and has secured financing from international institutions, including the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Asian Development Bank.
Once operational, the Neftchala solar project is expected to generate more than 686 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually. The plant is projected to supply electricity equivalent to the consumption of around 140,000 homes and avoid approximately 280,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
Masdar entered Azerbaijan’s renewable energy market through the 230MW Garadagh Solar project, which was inaugurated in 2023. The company, together with SOCAR Green, is also developing the 445MW Bilasuvar Solar project and the 240MW Absheron-Garadagh onshore wind project.
With these developments, Masdar’s total renewable energy capacity in Azerbaijan is expected to exceed 1.2GW. Globally, Masdar currently operates more than 65GW of renewable energy capacity and has set a target of reaching 100GW by 2030.
