US AEM electrolyser firm Power to Hydrogen (P2H2) has started commercial green hydrogen production with its 500kW system at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium.
Comprised of two AEM electrolyser stacks, it will supply 70 tonnes of green hydrogen per year to regional gas operator Holthausen and other local consumers.
It operates using power on Belgium’s day-ahead market, cycling on and off to use the cheapest available power to produce hydrogen at up to 200 bar.
The company previously told H2 View that hydrogen produced by the plant would beat the current €10 ($11.46) to €15/kg ($17.19) prices seen across the country’s refuelling stations.
It comes as the company low-degradation rates, with operational data intended to aid moving towards “multi-megawatt” deployments.
Described as a hybrid system, the cells use a separator between the membrane and electrode to prevent oxidation of the membrane and improve durability.
The technology was also recently for an EU-funded green hydrogen-based chemical project in Norway.
