E.ON and MEYER WERFT have signed a framework agreement for a long-term partnership aimed at decarbonising the shipbuilder’s operations in Germany. The companies have also signed five project development agreements covering initial energy and emissions reduction measures at the MEYER WERFT site in Papenburg.
The partners aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the Papenburg shipyard by around 25% by 2030, compared with the 2022 baseline. E.ON plans to invest up to €38 million in the initial measures through 2030.
Under the framework agreement, E.ON will finance the required energy infrastructure, while MEYER WERFT will use the infrastructure under a lease arrangement. The projects will be implemented in stages, subject to further technical, regulatory and economic assessments.
The first five projects identified by the companies include:
-Bidirectional shore power system: E.ON and MEYER WERFT plan to install a shore power system at the outfitting pier that will allow electricity to flow between ships and the shipyard. Electricity generated during ship engine and generator trials could subsequently be fed back to the yard.
-Air-source heat pump: A new heat pump is planned to replace oil- and gas-based building heating. The gas heating network in the shipbuilding halls is also expected to be converted to a water-based heating system.
-Electric radiant heating: Gas-fired heaters currently used for heating components will be replaced with electric radiant heaters equipped with demand-based controls to optimise energy consumption.
-Ventilation system upgrade: The existing ventilation infrastructure will be upgraded to improve energy efficiency through heat recovery and enhanced air distribution.
-Rooftop solar PV: A solar installation with an expected capacity of around 5 MWp is planned across approximately 24,500 square metres of roof space. The electricity generated will be used directly at the shipyard.
The companies said the measures are intended to reduce emissions from both the site’s energy supply and production processes while supporting the long-term competitiveness of the Papenburg shipyard.
MEYER WERFT is also developing battery-electric cruise ships as part of its “Vision” concept study, according to the company.
The partnership will extend beyond Papenburg, with similar decarbonisation projects already being developed for NEPTUN WERFT’s shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde, another site within the MEYER Group.
