New Fortress Energy’s (NFE) 1.4 million tonne per annum (mtpa) offshore Altamira liquefied natural gas (LNG) unit in Mexico has been taken offline due to a gas turbine mechanical issue.
The US LNG infrastructure developer said it is working with the turbine manufacturer to return the facility to operation. It currently expects production to resume during the fourth quarter of 2026.
The company has not disclosed the nature of the turbine failure, the equipment supplier, or the expected production impact from the shutdown.
Altamira is NFE’s first commercial Fast LNG installation and serves as the proof-of-concept for its modular liquefaction technology, which the company plans to replicate through additional 1.4 mtpa units.
It was deployed in partnership with Mexico’s state-owned utility CFE and liquefies gas supplied through the Sur de Texas-Tuxpan pipeline.
The project in July 2024 and by October that year was producing at or above its nameplate capacity.
Its Fast LNG configuration combines modular liquefaction equipment with jack-up infrastructure, an approach intended to reduce development schedules compared with conventional LNG export facilities.
NFE has previously outlined plans for up to two additional units at the Altamira terminal, while also considering deployments offshore Louisiana.
