Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., has commenced commercial operations at its 200 MWp Villameca solar photovoltaic project in Spain’s Castilla y León region. The project is expected to strengthen the company’s renewable energy portfolio in Spain and contribute to the country’s clean energy transition.
The Villameca solar project is expected to generate approximately 359,172 MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to meet the electricity needs of more than 100,000 homes. It is also projected to avoid around 57,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This reduction is equivalent to removing more than 12,000 internal combustion engine vehicles from the roads.
With the completion of Villameca, Recurrent Energy continues to expand its solar energy operations in Spain. The company has also recently inaugurated the 426 MWp Rey Solar project in Andalucía. In addition, its 315 MWp Tordesillas project in Castilla y León is expected to be connected to the grid later this year. Together, these three projects are expected to bring the company’s total operational solar capacity in Spain to approximately 1 GW by the end of 2026.
Dylan Marx, CEO of Recurrent Energy, said that the start of commercial operations at Villameca represents an important milestone for the company and strengthens its position in the European market. He also highlighted the company’s commitment to delivering long-term value to local communities and maintaining high standards for social responsibility and biodiversity protection.
During its permitting and construction phases, Villameca received the Union Española Fotovoltaica (UNEF) Seal of Excellence. The recognition reflects the project’s development in accordance with sustainability standards.
Through its Community CaRE programme, Recurrent Energy has supported local development through community facilities, educational improvements and social initiatives. The project also incorporates biodiversity measures, including habitat restoration, native vegetation planting and wildlife protection. These initiatives include nesting structures, bat boxes and insect hotels designed to support local ecosystems.
The company also plans to integrate battery energy storage systems into the Villameca project. The proposed hybridisation is expected to improve grid stability and support further decarbonisation by combining solar generation with energy storage.
Recurrent Energy has also announced the grid connection of Montalto La Viola, one of Italy’s first solar-plus-storage hybrid projects. These developments highlight the company’s continued focus on expanding integrated renewable energy solutions across Europe.
