Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, led the Indian delegation to Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2026, held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore from October 26 to 28. During the visit, he highlighted India’s progress in renewable energy, electricity capacity expansion and decentralized solar deployment while discussing stronger energy cooperation with Singapore, Bhutan and international organizations.
The event coincided with the 25th anniversary of Singapore’s Energy Market Authority. This year’s summit was expanded into a two-day programme featuring the Singapore-IEA Forum, Singapore-IRENA Forum and the International Atomic Energy Agency at SIEW. Naik delivered a keynote address on the first day and opening remarks on the second day.
Addressing the sessions, Naik said India’s installed electricity capacity reached 558.9 GW as of September 30, 2026, with approximately 308 GW, or 55%, coming from non-fossil sources. He highlighted that India achieved 50% non-fossil installed electricity capacity in June 2025, five years ahead of its 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution target. The country is now working towards achieving 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030.
He also outlined progress under major government programmes. Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, around 53 lakh rooftop solar systems had been installed, benefiting approximately 63 lakh households. Under PM-KUSUM, nearly 12 lakh standalone solar pumps had been installed, while more than 17 lakh grid-connected agricultural pumps had been solarized. These initiatives have added approximately 16.7 GW of decentralized renewable energy capacity and benefited around 30 lakh farmers.
On the sidelines of the event, Naik met Singapore’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Energy and Trade and Industry, Gan Siow Huang. Discussions focused on energy cooperation under the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including a proposed cross-border electricity interconnection. Naik invited long-term Singaporean investment in Indian transmission infrastructure, pumped storage, battery storage and renewable energy projects. The two sides also explored cooperation in green hydrogen, ammonia, energy efficiency and partnerships between Indian power equipment manufacturers and Singaporean utilities.
In a meeting with Bhutan’s Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, Lyonpo Sonam Tashi, Naik reviewed progress on the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project. Dam construction has progressed since concreting resumed in April 2026. Both sides also reviewed the operations of the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II project, discussed proposed projects involving Indian entities and examined cross-border transmission planning up to 2040.
Naik also met International Renewable Energy Agency Director-General Francesco La Camera to discuss cooperation under the strategic partnership signed between the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and IRENA in January 2022. Discussions covered affordable renewable energy financing, long-term energy planning, green hydrogen and capacity building in developing economies, including the ASEAN region.
During his meeting with International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol, Naik welcomed the forthcoming launch of the IEA’s India Renewable Energy Market Report 2026 at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and its India Critical Minerals Report at India Mining Week.
The visit concluded with visits to Sembcorp’s 326 MWh battery energy storage facility on Jurong Island and Keppel’s 22 MW waste-to-energy plant in Tuas. Sembcorp’s facility, comprising 800 large-scale lithium iron phosphate batteries, is Singapore’s largest utility-scale battery storage system and the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia.
The visit provided a platform to showcase India’s energy transition progress and strengthen international partnerships in renewable energy, storage, power infrastructure and emerging clean energy technologies.
