The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) and Burjeel Holdings have entered into a strategic agreement to power 22 healthcare facilities in Abu Dhabi with clean energy, utilizing Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE).

CECs serve as the only recognized instrument in Abu Dhabi for tracing electricity from renewable and clean energy sources. These certificates enable companies to verify their clean energy consumption and reduce Scope 2 emissions, aligning with broader sustainability efforts.

The agreement marks a significant milestone in Burjeel Holdings’ carbon neutrality strategy and reinforces the commitment of both organizations to decarbonization and sustainability.

Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management at EWEC, highlighted the impact of the collaboration, stating:
“By reducing the Scope 2 emissions of its medical facilities in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, Burjeel Holdings is making a significant step toward incorporating clean energy into its operations. This agreement reflects the growing commitment of key industries to lower their carbon footprint and aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative. EWEC remains committed to enabling organizations across various sectors to access verified clean energy solutions, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s leadership in sustainable energy adoption.”

Omran Alkhoori, President of Business Development and a Board Member at Burjeel Holdings, emphasized the group’s sustainability efforts, stating:
“At Burjeel Holdings, sustainability is at the core of our mission to deliver world-class healthcare. This partnership with EWEC is a pivotal step in our journey toward carbon neutrality. By integrating clean energy into our operations, we are reinforcing our commitment to environmentally responsible healthcare while contributing to the UAE’s broader sustainability goals.”

EWEC continues to promote the DoE’s CEC scheme, which supports various organizations in accelerating the decarbonization of their operations. Each CEC is issued in one-megawatt-hour units and is a tradable digital certificate that adheres to the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard), ensuring transparency and accountability in clean energy consumption.
