President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with bombings and sanctions if the two fail to reach an agreement on a new nuclear deal that would see Iran pledge not to build nuclear weapons.
Trump’s comments come in response to Iran’s official refusal to negotiate a new deal directly with Washington. The refusal came straight from Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, who, however, added that indirect negotiations are welcome. “It will be the actions of the Americans that determine whether negotiations continue,” Pezeshkian also said.

“In this response, although direct negotiations between the two parties are rejected, it has been stated that the path for indirect negotiations is open,” Pezeshkian said, adding that Iran had never avoided talks on a new nuclear deal but the United States had failed to keep its end of the previous bargain and terminate the original nuclear deal during Trump’s first term, media reported.
“If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing,” Trump said in a telephone interview with NBC. “It will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before.” The U.S. president said, however, the two sides were engaged in negotiations, which did not prevent him from extending a 25% indirect tariff threat to Tehran, as he had done in a separate NBC interview with regard to Russia.
“We’ll probably give it a couple of weeks and if we don’t see any progress, we’re going to put them on. We’re not putting them on right now. But if you remember, I did that six years ago, and it worked very well,” Trump told reporters, as quoted by Reuters.
Iran’s foreign minister, meanwhile, said this weekend that the country will not negotiate under pressure or threats, IRNA reported, citing Abbas Arakchi as saying that “Anyone who speaks to the Iranian people with the language of threats will receive the same response.”
