On April 5, 2025, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and the Hon’ble President of Sri Lanka, H.E. Anura Kumara Disanayake, jointly inaugurated the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the 50 MW Solar Power Project in Sri Lanka, which can be expanded to 120 MW. This event was part of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka from April 4 to April 6, 2025.

NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility, is making a significant move to strengthen India’s energy presence in neighboring countries with the development of the 120 MW solar project in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province. This project is being established through the Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC Limited and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) of Sri Lanka, with an estimated investment of approximately USD 100 million. TPCL has already signed the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with CEB and the Implementation Agreement (IA) with the Government of Sri Lanka for the first phase of the 50 MW project.

This solar initiative will diversify Sri Lanka’s energy mix, significantly enhance the country’s clean energy capacity, and help avoid approximately 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, reducing the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels.
