ACCIONA Energía has announced plans to build two new solar photovoltaic plants in Sicily after securing 151 MW of capacity in Italy’s latest FERX public renewable energy auction. The projects, named Panbianco (100.8 MWp) and Benante (50.2 MWp), will be located in the municipality of Lentini, in the province of Siracusa. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with commercial operation expected by the end of 2027.

Once operational, the two plants are expected to generate approximately 277.5 GWh of electricity per year, sufficient to meet the needs of more than 55,000 people. The clean energy produced will also help prevent over 125,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, which is equivalent to removing nearly 50,000 conventional internal combustion engine vehicles from the roads.

The projects were awarded under Italy’s FERX mechanism, the country’s long-term Contracts for Difference (CfD) system. This framework is designed to accelerate renewable energy deployment by guaranteeing price stability for 20 years, providing both certainty for developers and investors while supporting Italy’s broader decarbonization goals.

ACCIONA has maintained a strong presence in Italy for over 25 years, primarily through its water and construction operations. Notable projects include sections of the Apulia sanitation system, the Fuente Presidiana drinking water treatment plant, and the breakwater at the Port of Ravenna.

In the renewable energy sector, ACCIONA Energía currently operates four wind farms in Italy with a combined capacity of 156 MW: Cocullo in Abruzzo, Isola and Sant’Anna in Calabria, and Caccamo in Sicily. The addition of the Panbianco and Benante solar plants further strengthens ACCIONA Energía’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy footprint in Italy, contributing to sustainable energy generation and climate action goals.
