Alsons Power, the power generation arm of the Alcantara Group, is moving forward with its clean energy transition by converting its existing 55-megawatt Southern Philippines Power Corporation (SPPC) diesel power plant into a 98.7-megawatt solar power project. The facility is located in Alabel, Sarangani, in the southern Philippines. The project will be developed in two phases, beginning in the second quarter of 2026, and marks a major shift from diesel-based generation to renewable energy within the company’s portfolio.
The company stated that repurposing the existing diesel facility for solar energy development will help speed up the project timeline while making better use of existing infrastructure and assets. Alsons Power also believes the move will contribute to the Philippines’ national renewable energy goals and support the country’s growing demand for cleaner electricity sources.
Antonio Miguel B. Alcantara, President and Chief Executive Officer of Alsons Power, said the company is excited about transforming its fossil fuel assets into renewable energy projects. He described the initiative as an important step toward building a more diversified, secure, and sustainable energy future for the company and the region.
As part of the first phase of the project, Alsons Power signed an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) agreement with Sinohydro Corporation Limited and POWERCHINA Philippines Corporation. The initial phase includes the development of a 45-megawatt solar power installation. The selected contractors will be responsible for both onshore and offshore project works.
According to company officials, POWERCHINA’s global experience in clean energy projects will provide valuable technical expertise and help ensure timely project execution. The company added that the partnership is expected to support the project’s delivery schedule under the Philippines’ Green Energy Auction Program Round 4 (GEAP-4). The first phase is targeted for completion before September 2027.
The SPPC Solar project was among the successful projects awarded under GEAP-4, securing long-term offtake agreements that improve the project’s financial stability and long-term viability. Once fully operational, the solar facility is expected to generate enough electricity to supply around 104,000 households in the region. The project is also expected to strengthen power availability in Mindanao while reducing dependence on diesel fuel generation.
Meanwhile, Alsons Power is also preparing for the project’s second phase, which will study the integration of a battery energy storage system (BESS) with the solar photovoltaic facility. The addition of battery storage is expected to improve grid reliability, manage fluctuations in solar power generation, and provide support during periods of high electricity demand. Through the SPPC Solar project, Alsons Power aims to create long-term sustainable value while supporting the country’s transition toward cleaner energy solutions.
