APM Terminals Pipavav (Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd), a leading port in Western India, has partnered with CleanMax, a top renewable energy provider in Asia backed by Brookfield. This partnership highlights APM Terminals Pipavav’s dedication to sustainability by actively reducing its carbon footprint. As part of this collaboration, the companies have signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a hybrid Wind-Solar Power Project in Gujarat.

This initiative supports APM Terminals Pipavav’s goal to achieve net-zero operations by 2040 and cut its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 65% by 2030, compared to 2022 levels. This move reflects the port’s firm commitment to environmentally friendly practices, benefiting its employees, customers, and stakeholders. By taking these steps, APM Terminals Pipavav is setting an example in the port industry, inspiring others to embrace sustainable operations.

The project, with a combined capacity of 3.50 MW of wind power and 1.06 MWp of solar power, was developed under the Third-Party Open Access model in two phases. The first phase, completed in January 2022, included 2 MW of wind and 0.50 MWp of solar energy. The second phase, finished in September 2024, added 1.50 MW of wind and 0.56 MWp of solar power.

This hybrid energy setup supplies around 54 lakh kWh of electricity annually to APM Terminals Pipavav’s operations in Amreli, Gujarat, reducing approximately 3,822 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. This is equivalent to planting over 2.24 lakh trees annually. By adopting this clean energy solution, APM Terminals Pipavav is significantly cutting its carbon footprint and advancing towards global sustainability goals.

Mr. Girish Aggarwal, Managing Director of APM Terminals Pipavav (GPPL), said in a statement, “This partnership with CleanMax demonstrates our decarbonization efforts for the maritime industry. We are the first company in our industry to have our climate targets officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a globally recognized authority on climate responsibility. The association with CleanMax ensures we not only meet our renewable energy targets but also contribute meaningfully to India’s larger environmental goals. This further adds to our commitment to achieve full net-zero status by 2040.”

Mr. Kuldeep Jain, Managing Director of CleanMax, expressed his views by saying, “India’s maritime industry plays a critical role in driving economic growth, trade, and job creation. By transitioning to renewable energy, key infrastructure like ports can lead the way in demonstrating sustainable operations. Our partnership with GPPL highlights how CleanMax is helping industry leaders embrace clean energy solutions, ensuring long-term energy security and operational efficiency while significantly reducing carbon footprints. By combining wind and solar, we’re able to offer continuous power generation and reliability that will enable GPPL meet their sustainability targets effectively.”

This collaboration underscores APM Terminals Pipavav’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations while supporting India’s renewable energy goals. Switching to renewable energy not only aligns with the port’s vision of becoming a certified ‘Green Port’ but also brings long-term cost benefits through stable and predictable energy tariffs compared to conventional power. By teaming up with CleanMax, APM Terminals Pipavav is leading by example, encouraging other ports and industries across India to adopt sustainable practices. This partnership highlights the maritime sector’s vital role in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development.
