The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), in partnership with BSES, organized Electrical Safety Day 2026 in New Delhi on June 29, 2026, to promote awareness about electrical safety and fire prevention. The theme of this year’s event, “Today’s Awareness, Tomorrow’s Prevention: Let Us All Unite to Prevent Fire Hazards from Electrical Short Circuits,” focused on educating people about the importance of preventing electrical accidents through better awareness and safe practices.
The event witnessed participation from more than 1,300 delegates who attended in person. These included officials from power utilities, state electrical inspectorates, resident welfare associations, manufacturers, schools, hospitals, and other organizations. Many more participants joined the programme online through a live YouTube webcast, making the event accessible to a wider audience across the country.
Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, addressed the gathering through a video message. He said that electrical safety is essential for India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. He stressed that many electrical accidents and fires caused by short circuits can be avoided through regular safety inspections, proper earthing systems, and timely maintenance of electrical installations.
Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, also shared a video message. He encouraged people to avoid overloading electrical circuits, use good-quality electrical equipment, and follow safe electrical practices throughout the year instead of only during awareness campaigns.
Speaking at the event, CEA Chairperson Shri Ghanshyam Prasad emphasized the need to build a long-term culture of electrical safety. He said that prevention should become a regular habit rather than a one-time activity.
Director General of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards, Shri Sunil Kumar Jha, highlighted that the rapid growth of electric vehicles, data centres, and renewable energy projects has created new fire safety challenges. He explained that loose electrical connections, old wiring, and poor-quality electrical equipment continue to be major causes of electrical fires. To address emerging risks related to Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), he announced new joint training guidelines for fire auditors and firefighters.
The programme also saw the launch of two educational publications. “Vidyut Suraksha Bodh” is an illustrated handbook designed to teach children basic electrical safety practices, while the “Electrical Fire Safety Book” provides practical guidance for homes and industries on preventing electrical fires and responding during emergencies.
To spread awareness in an engaging way, the event included a street play and a presentation titled “Fire Speaks – The Journey of Fire,” explaining the causes and prevention of electrical fires. Expert technical sessions on BESS fire safety and modern prevention technologies were also held. The programme marked the beginning of National Electrical Safety Week, during which schools and communities across India will conduct awareness activities to encourage safe electrical practices in everyday life.
