Canadian gas producer and distributor Charbone Corporation (Charbone) has entered into a conditional offtake and infrastructure development agreement with US clean energy company Vema Hydrogen (Vema) to develop a hydrogen production and processing project in Quebec, Canada.
The partnership aims to build a regional “well-to-market” hydrogen supply chain by integrating Vema’s low-carbon hydrogen technology with Charbone’s gas purification and distribution infrastructure.
The companies target a hydrogen supply of up to 15 tonnes per day (tpd) to support low-carbon maritime and aviation fuel production, e-fuels, and power generation.
The Quebec site was selected to target industrial demand and provide proximity to existing transport infrastructure.
In December 2025, Charbone announced its from its hydro-powered electrolyser installation at the flagship Sorel-Tracey project in Quebec.
The company received its for green hydrogen from an unnamed US customer earlier this year, marking a milestone for the Canadian firm as it targets expansion into the US market.
In February, Vema completed drilling its first two pilot wells to develop its engineered mineral hydrogen technology in Quebec. Vema’s technology uses naturally occurring chemical reactions in subsurface rock formations to produce clean hydrogen.
