The European Commission has announced the allocation of €52 million in funding through the EU Renewable Energy Financing Mechanism (RENEWFM) to support nine renewable energy projects across Finland and Estonia. This funding, which nearly matches the total call budget of €52.4 million, is aimed at enhancing the EU’s renewable energy capacity and promoting cross-border collaboration between Member States.

The selected projects—comprising seven solar photovoltaic initiatives in Finland and two onshore wind projects in Estonia—will together add 445.65 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity. All installations are expected to be operational between 2027 and 2028.

Finland has secured funding for seven solar PV projects, each contributing to the country’s solar energy transition. The awarded initiatives include:

  • Laivakangas Solar Park, Tornio – €4.2 million to convert a 78-hectare former gravel site into a solar plant in Northern Finland.
  • Lamminneva Solar Park, Lappajärvi – €3.5 million to transform a former peat extraction area in Southern Ostrobothnia into a solar energy farm.
  • Isoneva Solar Park, Suonenjoki – €5.6 million to repurpose peatlands in Northern Savonia into a solar facility.
  • Kouvola Lakiasuo PV Plant – €7.7 million to establish an industrial-scale solar park in Southeastern Finland using 150 hectares of former peat production sites.
  • JoSoleilTwo, Joroinen – €5.7 million to build a ground-mounted solar PV project in the North Savo region.
  • Lålby Solar Power Park – €5.9 million to develop a solar power plant on a reclaimed waste deposit area.
  • Pori Peittoo Solar PV-plant – €1.1 million to build a solar installation on a designated material handling zone.

Estonia will strengthen its wind energy infrastructure through two newly funded onshore projects:

  • Püssi Project – €9.8 million to establish a hybrid renewable energy park combining both solar and wind generation.
  • Maima Wind Park – €8.2 million to construct an onshore wind farm in the villages of Tarva and Tõrdu, within the Põhja-Pärnumaa municipality.

These investments underline the EU’s commitment to renewable energy deployment and climate neutrality goals, while fostering joint efforts among Member States to achieve the EU Green Deal objectives.
