German chemical manufacturer Evonik has signed an agreement to supply its membrane technology to Malaysian biogas upgrading specialist MTC Orec Sdn Bhd (MTCO) to support biomethane production projects across Malaysia and wider Asia.
Evonik’s Sepuran Green membranes will turn biogas into high purity biomethane – or renewable natural gas (RNG) – with low energy consumption.
The technology is compatible with landfill, agricultural, organic waste, and wastewater treatment upgrading projects and can be customised to MTCO’s biogas upgrading specifications.
Dr. Zahari bin Mohamad, CEO of MTCO, said, “We aren’t just building plants; we are developing an ecosystem that supports Malaysia’s position as the central hub for bioenergy in Southeast Asia.”
MTCO is co-owned and managed by VentureTECH, funded by the Malaysian government, which aims to expand its biogas upgrading technology across Asia.
Goetz Baumgarten, Head of Membranes and Fibers at Evonik, said MTCO’s plans for expanding biogas plants in Malaysia and across Asia align with Evonik’s growth strategy for membrane technology.
According to market research, Asia’s biogas market is expected to grow from $24.56bn in 2023 to reach $36.35bn by 2030, representing growth of 5.8%.
