Ghana has taken a step forward in its renewable energy agenda with the commissioning of a 50-megawatt solar power plant in Galgu, Yendi Municipality. The project, part of a broader plan to develop 500 megawatts of solar capacity, was developed by the Bui Power Authority (BPA) in partnership with First Sky Limited.

The $59 million facility, constructed under an Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Financing (EPC+F) agreement, will supply electricity directly to the national grid. Officials say the project aligns with Ghana’s target of achieving 10% renewable energy in its national energy mix by 2030.

Speaking at the commissioning, BPA Chief Executive Officer Samuel Kofi Dzamesi highlighted the project’s role in improving energy security, reducing fossil fuel reliance, and supporting industrial growth. A newly inaugurated Grid Company Limited facility will also help distribute the generated power to substations.

The initiative is expected to create jobs and attract investment to northern Ghana. Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu, represented by Yendi Municipal Chief Executive Alhaji Hammed Abubakar Yussuf, expressed optimism about its economic benefits.

The project is part of a larger plan by BPA and First Sky Limited to develop 500MW of renewable energy capacity across Ghana, with additional projects planned for Yapei and Salaga. Before the commissioning, BPA officials met with Ya-Na Abukari II, Overlord of Dagbon, to acknowledge his support in allocating 140 acres for the facility. Authorities have assured measures to safeguard the plant’s operations.
